Powerline Corona Discharge Mapping Caused by an intense electrical field, corona discharge is the ionization of nitrogen in the air. Corona events cause power loss and degrade insulation for conductors and insulators leading to flash-overs, premature failures, and outages.
Measuring and detecting corona events can drastically improve utility companies' preventative maintenance practices, saving time and money and reducing outages. Through research sponsored by EPRI, an ultraviolet corona camera system was successfully created that accurately captures corona events. Lanworth provides turnkey aerial corona camera services. The camera is mounted on a helicopter and is gyro-stabilized, generating quality imagery for HV lines, substations, and distribution lines.
Furthermore, Lanworth processes the imagery in a manner so it is fully integrated into GIS/AM/FM systems, tying asset information directly to the corona data. A user can simply click on a structure/substation/line and see the imagery for that area. Lanworth also interprets the imagery and provides all the needed management reports, identifying all significant corona events with GPS coordinates.
The benefits of using Lanworth's corona system services include:
